Some twenty years ago when my eyes were first opened to the Gospel message, Hell was a topic that was readily heard and discussed both from pulpits and Christian radio programs. The “Left Behind” series had also just been released which could have contributed to the topic of Hell being on the forefront of many minds. As a young believer this awareness was used of the Lord to stir both a passion within me for the lost, as well as a desire for holiness in every area of my life. I wanted nothing to do with sin and was willing to risk humiliation with public confession if it meant I would have been freed of its grips for good. Unfortunately, today it’s now uncommon to hear such a message. It wasn’t until this Sunday after hearing Pastor preach such a Word that I realized it’s absence in today’s Christian culture and it’s need to be revisited.
Matin Marty, a church historian has said, “Hell has disappeared and no one noticed.” Many believe Hell is no more. They even say, Hell is theology’s
“H” word!
Makes you wonder why the enemy of our soul would be so interested in removing the awareness of Hell from society.
HELL IS REAL
Jesus preached about Hell more then anyone else in the Bible. One of the most vivid descriptions of Hell came from Jesus when he spoke of Lazarus and the rich man. It’s important to note that Jesus wasn’t merely telling a parable, rather he was vividly describing two individuals. (Luke 19:19-31) Other scriptures that would be good to review are Psalms 9:17, Matthew 5:29, Revelations 20:14, and Hebrews 9:27.
Hell wasn’t create for you and me, rather those who will find themselves arriving at its destination is by choice. Our eternal home is purchased while we live in this temporary home and only those who accept the price paid in full by Jesus’ blood will find themselves forever with Him.
THE REALITY OF HELL
The reality of Hell makes the reality of forgiveness that much sweeter!
“She has been forgiven of all her many sins. This is why she has shown me such extravagant love. But those who assume they have very little to be forgiven will love me very little.””
Luke 7:47 TPT
Unless we come to grips with the reality of Hell, we will never truly understand the debts of what Jesus did for us on the cross. What Jesus went through, including the agony of being separated from the Father was done voluntarily for you and me.
