In reflecting on Psalm 124, we know this is a psalm of David written in difficult circumstances. David uses language such as violent anger, being swallowed up alive, drowning beneath his enemies torrent of terror to attempt to give words to the misery of this day! It can be difficult to place ourselves in David’s shoes, but the words he penned to describe its terror can be felt even today. Have you ever felt as you were being swallowed alive or were drowning beneath the terror of a specific situation? I would have to believe not many of us have been given immunity to these moments. Difficulties have a way of removing our Superman complex and revealing someone much more worthy of praise! Most of the time, It’s not until difficulties arise and you’re out of options that your compete helplessness is made vividly clear!

You could also title Psalm 124, ”The Great Escape! “ However, unlike the movie by the same title, the escape is not the result of his own skill or ingenuity, but because God intervened! David wrote, “We can praise God over and over that He never left us. We are free from the hunter’s trap; the snare is broken and we have escaped!”

Where would we be without God? My heart almost can’t take the thought of my life without Him! What would your life be like if God had not helped you, protected you, saved you, changed you? Galatians 6:3 says: “If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”

QUESTIONS:
1. How do you acknowledge your complete dependence on God? (First of all, affirm the difference God makes in your life. Secondly, praise God for his protection and deliverance in your life. And then thirdly, tell others how God has helped you.)
