The key to gaining more wisdom is to become more like a child. Doesn’t sound quite right, does it? We often think that in order to become wiser we have to ‘grow up’, gain more knowledge, or become smarter than everybody else. However, the Bible shows us that the key to gaining wisdom is to actually become more childlike.
Proverbs 8:12 says, “I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.”
Wisdom is acting correctly in any given situation. Jesus held all wisdom, knowledge, and discretion. He was the perfect example of a what a Christian should be; he always knew what to do, what to say, and how to say it.
As we look at the Bible, what do we learn from Jesus’ journey of faith? We learn that in order to gain wisdom we must not be dependent on our own competency, but instead we must become completely dependent upon our Father:
- Jesus knew nothing on his own. John 14:10
- Jesus spoke nothing on his own. John 12:49
- Jesus did nothing on his own. John 5:19
- Jesus did not judge on his own. John 5:30
Jesus showed us that Christianity is not a pathway to competence, but a pathway to childlikeness. Growing up in wisdom means becoming more like a child in our faith.
Father,
It is a relief to know that growing up in my faith means to remain like a child. I just love the thought of being your son – that little boy who can’t wait until dad gets home so he can wrestle with him on the floor. I don’t have to save the world. I don’t have to fix everybody’s problems. I don’t have to have the answer and solution to every question and trouble I’m faced with today. You have all the answers. I am in You and You are in me. So I jump in the truck with you and say, “Take me with you, Papa. Wherever you go, I go. Whatever you do, I do. Whatever you decide, I decide. Whatever you say, I say. Today is going to be a great day, Papa. This is going to be one heck of a ride!”
